Tooth Extraction

Finding out you need a tooth extraction can feel stressful at first, but it doesn't have to be. With the right dental team on your side, the experience can be smooth and comfortable from start to finish.

Dr. Faircloth provides gentle, stress-free extractions right here at our Detroit dental office. For more complex surgical extractions or impacted teeth, she may refer you to a trusted oral surgeon.

When Do We Recommend Tooth Extraction?

At Harbortown Dental Care, one of our primary goals is to help patients maintain their natural teeth, which is why Dr. Faircloth recommends removing a tooth only after all other options have been exhausted.

These are some of the circumstances when she may recommend tooth extraction:

  • For severe decay or damage that has rendered the tooth unsalvageable
  • When the tooth is infected beyond what a root canal can restore
  • For a tooth that’s severely broken or decayed
  • To eliminate crowded teeth for successful orthodontic treatment
  • For treatment with dentures, partials, or implants
  • To remove wisdom teeth that are crowding neighboring teeth or are impacted or painful

How Tooth Extraction Benefits Your Oral Health

Removing a tooth is often the best option for your smile, oral health, and overall well-being. Here’s how the procedure may benefit you.
Pain Relief
An unsalvageable infected tooth may be causing significant pain or discomfort. Tooth extraction provides relief.
Neighboring Teeth
An untreated infected tooth can damage surrounding teeth. Tooth extraction protects them.
Prevents Damage
An infected tooth can affect neighboring teeth and move into other critical areas of the body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Recovering from a tooth extraction is very manageable when you know what to expect — and at Harbortown Dental Care, Dr. Faircloth and our team will make sure you're fully prepared before you leave our office. While every patient heals at their own pace, most people feel significantly better within a few days following their procedure.

Tips and Tricks for a Smooth Recovery

Here are some helpful tips to support a smooth and comfortable recovery:

  • Manage discomfort early. Some soreness and swelling are completely normal. Over-the-counter pain relievers and a cold compress applied to the outside of your cheek can help keep you comfortable in the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • Protect the clot. A blood clot forms in the extraction site and is essential for proper healing. Avoid drinking through a straw, smoking, or vigorously rinsing, as these actions can dislodge the clot and lead to an uncomfortable condition called a dry socket.
  • Stick to soft foods. For the first few days, enjoy gentle options like soup, applesauce, yogurt, and mashed potatoes. Avoid crunchy, spicy, hard, or chewy foods until Dr. Faircloth gives you the all-clear.
  • Keep the area clean. After the first 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water to help keep the extraction site clean and promote healing.
  • Rest and take it easy. Avoid exercise or rigorous activity for 24 to 48 hours after your procedure to allow your body to heal properly.

What to Expect During Your Tooth Extraction in Detroit

Dr. Faircloth’s gentle and friendly demeanor puts her patients at ease, especially during procedures such as tooth extractions. She takes the time to explain the procedure to you thoroughly, so you have a complete understanding of what will take place before your treatment begins, which helps to minimize anxiety.

She uses local anesthesia to numb your tooth, so you don’t feel anything throughout the procedure, except perhaps some gentle pressure as she removes the tooth.

After your tooth extraction, we’ll send you home with detailed instructions to help you recover smoothly. Our team is here to support you before, during, and after your tooth extraction. If you have any questions or concerns after your procedure, don’t hesitate to call us.
