Tooth Extraction

Recovering from a tooth extraction is very manageable when you know what to expect — and at Harbortown Dental Care, Dr. Faircloth and our team will make sure you're fully prepared before you leave our office. While every patient heals at their own pace, most people feel significantly better within a few days following their procedure.

Tips and Tricks for a Smooth Recovery

Here are some helpful tips to support a smooth and comfortable recovery:

  • Manage discomfort early. Some soreness and swelling are completely normal. Over-the-counter pain relievers and a cold compress applied to the outside of your cheek can help keep you comfortable in the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • Protect the clot. A blood clot forms in the extraction site and is essential for proper healing. Avoid drinking through a straw, smoking, or vigorously rinsing, as these actions can dislodge the clot and lead to an uncomfortable condition called a dry socket.
  • Stick to soft foods. For the first few days, enjoy gentle options like soup, applesauce, yogurt, and mashed potatoes. Avoid crunchy, spicy, hard, or chewy foods until Dr. Faircloth gives you the all-clear.
  • Keep the area clean. After the first 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water to help keep the extraction site clean and promote healing.
  • Rest and take it easy. Avoid exercise or rigorous activity for 24 to 48 hours after your procedure to allow your body to heal properly.
