Clear aligners are a discreet and convenient way to align your teeth. However, cleaning them is essential for maintaining both your oral health and the life of your trays. At Harbortown Dental Care, we want to make sure your treatment goes as smoothly as possible, so here's what you need to know.
Clear Aligner Care 101
Rinse them whenever you remove them. Always rinse your aligners with lukewarm water when you take them out. This helps prevent plaque and bacteria from building up on the trays.
Clean them every day. To keep your aligners fresh and clear, we recommend:
- Brushing them gently with mild, clear soap and a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Rinsing thoroughly after cleaning to remove any soap residue
- Soaking them in aligner cleaning crystals or a denture cleaner for a deeper clean
- Avoiding toothpaste, which can be abrasive and cause scratches
Avoid heat and harsh products. Never use hot water to clean your aligners; it can warp the plastic and affect your treatment. Similarly, steer clear of colored or scented soaps, which may stain or damage the trays.
Keep your mouth clean, too. Brushing and flossing before you reinsert your aligners helps prevent food particles and bacteria from trapping against your teeth.
